STRATEGIES THAT CREATE

WAVES OF CHANGE

Our strategy is to create and provide different resources to reach key audiences that are essential to transforming the food system. These resources will include powerful and personal stories that are educational and inspiring. Our hope is that through stories, tips, and even recipes - human consumption habits will change and help to preserve and protect our oceans and waterways.

STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS

EACH STRATEGY, A RIPPLE

There is a need to enrich the existing conversations with valuable, eye-opening, educational resources. Our mission is to provide and inspire visionaries, thought leaders, ocean lovers, activists, early-adopters, foodies, and consumers with the necessary knowledge and materials to help protect and participate in a responsible blue food system.

K-12 EDUCATION

Our vision is to accelerate learning through content that empowers young people to be agents of change. We will work with education organizations to utilize and complement existing learning platforms with videos, lesson plans, and professional development tools that will support teachers to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable blue food.

COMING Fall 2024

  • Edit the Hope In The Water docuseries for classroom viewing and develop supporting curricula

  • Distribute educational content via PBS Learning Media

  • Distribute Toolkits for teachers and parents for use in before and after school settings

  • Educator training via World Savvy

COMMUNITY EVENTS

It is clear that communities can affect important changes by working collectively. We will create educational Toolkits to inspire them to take action together. A healthier and more resilient blue food system can be available everywhere!

Coming June 2024

  • Distribute Toolkits for guided screenings in communities

  • Support local PBS affiliates with hosted screenings, blue food tastings and educational events

RETAIL & FOOD SERVICE

By working with organizations such as the James Beard Foundation, we are aiming to have diverse and responsibly sourced blue food included in menus. Building relationships with retailers is another priority for us. They can support the success of these products by placing responsibly sourced blue food in high traffic areas and at price points that are affordable.

Coming June 2024

  • Expand Seafood Scout (Fed by Blue’s connected market tool) to bring digital traceability of responsible blue food at retail and food service

  • Expand the Smart Catch Program among chefs and restaurants in tandem with the Independent Restaurant Coalition

  • Expand access to responsibly sourced blue food at retail and in corporate, education, museum and aquarium dining services

  • Expand blue food education through retailers, chefs and restaurants

MEDIA

Mass media has a significant role in focusing the public’s attention on the topics of importance and matter. We will begin to engage with different media outlets in raising awareness and understanding of responsibly sourced blue food. This effort will include work to connect with writers, producers, and broadcasters to discuss opportunities to highlight and educate about blue food in media content.

  • Continue robust social media campaign

  • Work to connect with TV writers, producers, and broadcasters to discuss opportunities to highlight and educate about blue food in media content

  • Partner with film, music and digital media engaging in ocean and water conservation topics

POLICY & SOLUTIONS

Advocacy and policy work will define the success of responsible blue food. Blue food is harvested locally and internationally, and in many places, governments are making policy decisions based on old rules and standards. As we all work toward growing a responsible blue food system, policies need to evolve to support best practices and broader food access. Changes can only happen through transparent conversations that educate about the science behind the importance of sustainable blue food production and consumption.

  • Build a constituency to advocate for protected areas and responsible blue food production

  • Docuseries screenings for policymakers and staff

  • Support inclusion of blue food in US dietary guidelines

  • Support efforts requiring retailers to provide blue food traceability for consumers

Sustainable blue food can transform the current food systems but that requires a lot of work. We are prepared for it! And we are preparing the tools that will empower you on your own personal journey towards a brighter future for all people and the planet.
