STRATEGIES THAT CREATE

WAVES OF CHANGE

Our strategy is to create and provide different resources to reach key audiences that are essential to transforming the food system. These resources will include powerful and personal stories that are educational and inspiring. Our hope is that through stories, tips, and even recipes - human consumption habits will change and help to preserve and protect our oceans and waterways.

STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS

EACH STRATEGY, A RIPPLE

There is a need to enrich the existing conversations with valuable, eye-opening, educational resources. Our mission is to provide and inspire visionaries, thought leaders, ocean lovers, activists, early-adopters, foodies, and consumers with the necessary knowledge and materials to help protect and participate in a responsible blue food system.

6-12 EDUCATION

Our vision is to accelerate learning through content that empowers young people to be agents of change. We are working with education organizations to utilize and complement existing learning platforms with videos, lesson plans, and professional development tools that support teachers in raising awareness about the importance of responsible blue food.

  • Edited the Hope In The Water docuseries into five bespoke lessons for classroom viewing and develop supporting curriculum

  • Distributed educational content via PBS Learning Media

  • Distributed Toolkits to 440,000 teachers for use in S.T.E.A.M. and career development education.

  • Partnered with Grades of Green and Yellow Farmhouse Education Center to bring blue food education into schools and engage youth in real-world sustainability projects

COMMUNITY EVENTS

It is clear that communities can affect important changes by working collectively. Through dozens of hosted events in regions throughout the U.S. and abroad we are inspiring them to take action together. A healthier and more resilient blue food system can be available everywhere!

Fed by Blue Events typically include:

  • Support from a local PBS affiliate and includes a screening, blue food tasting and educational events

  • Outreach and engagement with local teachers and students

  • Partnerships with local restaurants and retailers

  • Ask about hosting a screening in your community!

RETAIL & FOOD SERVICE

We advocate for diverse and responsibly sourced blue food to be included in retailers and on menus, prioritizing building relationships with grocers and culinary professionals. Retailers can support the success of these products by placing responsibly sourced blue food in high traffic areas and at price points that are affordable.

  • Expanded access to responsibly sourced blue food at retail and in corporate, education, museum and aquarium dining services

  • Conducted retail and restaurant campaigns that highlighted the content from the docuseries in support of the responsible seafood on menu or in the fish case

  • Expand blue food education through retailers, chefs and restaurants to support the awareness of responsible seafood sourcing

MEDIA

Mass media has a significant role in focusing the public’s attention on the topics of importance and matter. We engage with different media outlets in raising awareness and understanding of responsibly sourced blue food. This effort includes work to connect with writers, producers, and broadcasters to discuss opportunities to highlight and educate about blue food in media content.

  • Produced the PBS docuseries Hope in the Water, the Fed by Blue podcast on Heritage Radio Network, and The Blue Food Cookbook by Andrew Zimmern & Barton Seaver

  • Partner with film, music, and digital media professionals engaging in ocean and water conservation topics

  • Connect with writers, producers, and broadcasters to discuss opportunities to highlight and educate about blue food in media content

  • Drive robust social media campaigns to educate on the need for a responsible blue food system

BUILD A MOVEMENT

The conversation around sustainable food systems has long focused on land and agriculture, overlooking the fact that 71% of our planet is water. Across that blue expanse, fishers and aquaculture farmers are building on generations of knowledge, stewarding ecosystems while feeding communities. Their work has too often been left out of the global food conversation. It’s time to bridge that gap because a truly responsible food system depends on both land and water, working together.

Through our programs, initiatives, and partnerships, we’re seeding conversations across industries—from culinary and tech to education and the arts. We’re connecting people, ideas, and solutions to bring blue food into the broader movement for food systems change. Blue foods have the potential to nourish a growing global population while restoring the health of our ocean and waterways. The movement we’re building invites everyone across sectors and disciplines to be part of that future.

Responsible blue food can transform the current food systems but that requires a lot of work. We are prepared for it! And we are preparing the tools that will empower you on your own personal journey towards a brighter future for all people and the planet.
